According to a recent sociological study done by Italian researchers, slightly under 90,000 Moldovans live in Italy, which makes up for about 2.3 percent of the total number of immigrants in the country.
Most Moldovans residing in Italy work there, and are part of a mass exodus that started after the fall of the Soviet Union. Although it is unclear how many Moldovans have left their country to look for work abroad, that number is most likely in the hundreds of thousands.
